UEFA Champions League: Benfica vs Bayern Munich Preview, Odds, Predictions
Benfica and Bayern Munich will face off on Wednesday evening at La Luz stadium in Lisbon. Both of these teams have had a magnificent run, but lately Bayern have been much better when it comes to winning international trophies. The German champions are hot right now, while the Eagles have shown some inconsistency. After a big win over Barcelona, Benfica had two extremely pale matches in domestic competitions. Wednesday’s clash will be an opportunity to prove that a victory against Barca was not just a lucky day.
Benfica (+700) won a victory over Troforense in the Portuguese Cup, 1-2, but only after extra time. They had previously lost to Portimorense at home, 0-1, which was one of the biggest surprises in all of Europe.
These two pale performances cast a little shadow over the Eagles’ victory over Barcelona, 3-0. The way Benfica blasted Blaugrana was impressive, and at that point we started to think Jorge Jesus’ side had a solid chance of reaching second place and a ticket to the knockout stage.
After recording four clean sheets in five matches, the Benfica defense has loosened its grip, having only one such match in the last five matches. Overall, their offense is solid and has managed to score two or more goals in seven of the Eagles’ last 10 games.
Bayern Munich (-290) was fantastic in the first half against Bayer Leverkusen today. They have scored five goals, including four in the final 15 minutes of the opening streak.
The Bavarians are not slowing down at all and it looks like the loss to Eintracht Frankfurt in Munich was just an unfortunate turn for Nagelsmann and his team. Bayern have yet to allow a single UEFA Champions League goal, beating Barcelona at Camp Nou 0-3 and Dynamo Kiev at home 5-0.
We looked at their last 10 games and found that they have all scored at least three goals and this night ended with over 2.5 goals. On the road, Bayern are just as impressive as when they are playing at home. The last four games have seen them all win and score three or more times.
It looks like all Benfica players are in good health and ready to play this game. Haris Seferovic is recovered and ready to roll.
All Bayern players are also in the protocol.
Head to head games
Since 1976, Bayern and Benfica have played 10 times, and the Portuguese side have not recorded any wins. The overall score in these events is seven wins for the Germans with three draws. Bayern beat Benfica in both matches in 2018, it was the last time these teams met.
The difference in quality is evident here, and the bookies haven’t put such small odds on the guests for no reason. Bayern will win this game, but we think the profit from their mere victory is far too small, which is why we suggest choosing Bayern wins with a -1.5 goal handicap. The Germans have more than enough firepower to cover the spread and bring us money. Maybe big sum.
Picks: Bayern -1.5 -110
