Sports Minister urges IMC to resuscitate NPFL
The Honorable Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr Sunday Dare has called on the newly inaugurated Interim Management Committee (IMC) of the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) to resuscitate the league and restore it to glory past.
The Minister made the call in his office in Abuja when he received the Committee members who were visiting there.
Mr Dare expressed concern over the deteriorating state of the Nigerian Professional Football League which he said was once the pride of the nation.
According to him, “our professional league which was once our pride in this country is now sick and has become a caricature of itself which needs urgent attention”, further pointing out that once a sport lacks competition, this sport is dead.
The minister explained that football can also become a profitable business in the country, if only the league can be revived.
He added that private investors are always ready to invest their resources in football if the governance structure and environment are right and therefore called on the IMC to spare no effort to ensure the revival of the league.
Dare informed that President Muhammadu Buhari has put in place the football master plan, which state governments are ready to adopt and further urged the committee members to work with the plan and other stakeholders, in order to deliver the football league on foot.
He assured that the government is ready to provide the necessary support to the IMC to revitalize the league to enable it to stand out in international competitions.
Speaking earlier, the chairman of the committee, Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye, assured that the members will bring their rich experience to ensure the resuscitation of the League.
He said the Committee will also work in partnership with relevant stakeholders to achieve their mandate.
