Man dies after shooting at Grant-Monterey Trail football game

A shooting outside a Friday football game in Sacramento is now being investigated as a homicide, police say. According to a department spokesperson at the scene early Saturday morning, a man in his 20s died of his injuries from the shooting. “This violence is unacceptable,” said Zach Eaton of the Sacramento Police Department. “This violence continues to be unacceptable in our city.” A KCRA 3 photojournalist was covering the game between Grant High School and Monterey Trail High School when the shooting happened in Grant High’s parking lot. They reported seeing a car with bullet holes and an empty magazine on the ground. Eaton said around 10 p.m. there was a “disruption” in the parking lot involving up to 20 people. Eaton said the shooting happened sometime during that disruption as the football game was unfolding. He said the members of the group involved were not believed to be high school students. Eaton also confirmed that a firearm was located at the scene, a car was damaged by gunfire and someone transported the victim to hospital. Early Saturday morning, it was not believed anyone else was injured in the ordeal. The department is asking anyone with information about the case to contact investigators. “We’re looking for some of these people to come forward and talk to us,” Eaton said. The Sacramento Police Department will investigate the homicide. Homicide and crime scene investigators remained at the scene, processing evidence and searching for video, beginning at 1 a.m. Saturday. It’s a developing story. Stick with KCRA 3 for the latest.
