Cameron Green will return to the BBL with the Perth Scorchers after adding his name to the list of Australia Test players who will appear after the series against South Africa.

Green last played in the tournament in the 2019-20 season and could be available for six regular season matches after the Sydney test depending on how he is handled ahead of the India tour in february.

His T20 career is still in its infancy with 14 appearances – 13 for the Scorchers and one for Australia – and he has yet to make a significant impact, but the majority of his innings have come in the No. 6 and 7. However, teammate AJ Tye there was no doubt he would break through in the format.

“We had a year of him at Scorchers two years ago and he was still pressing his craft back then, but you look at him and the way he’s matured over the last two years, maybe he’s not- not be the star player in T20 but he will be,” Tye told ESPNcricinfo at the BBL project launch. “He’s got the game, he’s got the attributes, he can play fast and hit anywhere. He’s definitely a player to watch and hopefully in the next few years we’ll see him in the Big Bash a bit more. .”

Green completes the Scorchers’ domestic roster for the 2022-23 season with their final three spots in the 18-man squad up for grabs at the overseas player draft on Sunday.

“We are delighted to see Cam return to Scorchers colours. Adding a player of his caliber to our strong home squad is huge,” said Scorchers head coach Adam Voges. “His skill with bat and ball has been on regular display for WA and Australia in recent years, and we are excited about the versatility he offers us.”

Green’s deal follows the sizeable offer made to David Warner for his two-year contract in Sydney. Travis Head (Adelaide Strikers) and Marnus Labuschagne (Brisbane Heat) have also signed new contracts. Mitchell Starc has already said he will rest with Pat Cummins who is expected to do the same. It remains to be confirmed if Josh Hazlewood will be available. Steven Smith turned down the initial offer from the Sydney Sixers but there is still hope that he will play.
