2022 Undefeated FBS College Football Teams

We started with 131 college football teams hoping to go undefeated this FBS season. Heading into Week 6 action, only 15 teams remain perfect. What used to be a long list is now an exclusive list that keeps shrinking.

Here’s a look at all the remaining undefeated FBS teams this season. Teams are listed in AP Poll ranking order, followed by alphabetical order if they are not in the top 25.

2022 Undefeated FBS College Football Teams

No. 1 Alabama

Registration: 5-0 (2-0 SEC)
Last match: Def. Texas A&M, 24-20
next game: in Tennessee | 3:30 p.m. Saturday, October 15
Toughest remaining matches: in Tennessee (Oct. 15); at Ole Miss (Nov. 12)
Last unbeaten season: 2020 (13-0, won CFP national title)

Alabama lost Heisman-winning QB Bryce Young to injury, but the Tide still won big at Arkansas last week thanks to RB Jahmyr Gibbs (206 rushing yards, two touchdowns). Four currently ranked teams remain on the schedule, but that doesn’t include Texas A&M and rival Auburn.

#2 Georgia

Registration: 6-0 (3-0 SEC)
Last match: Def. Auburn, 42-10
next game: against Vanderbilt | 3:30 p.m. Saturday, October 15
Toughest remaining matches: vs. Tennessee (November 5); in Kentucky (November 19)
Last unbeaten season: 1980 (12-0, won national title)

The defending champion Bulldogs played the role early in the season, including a rout of ranked Oregon. But Georgia has struggled the last two of the last three weeks against Kent State and especially Missouri. Still, the Bulldogs bounced back with a dominating second half against Auburn remaining undefeated and title favorites.

Ohio State No. 3

Registration: 6-0 (3-0 Big Ten)
Last match: Def. Michigan State, 49-20
next game: vs Iowa | Saturday October 22
Toughest remaining matches: at Penn State (October 29); vs. Michigan (November 26)
Last unbeaten season: 2012 (12-0)

The Buckeyes have yet to be tested, although a road trip to Happy Valley is planned for the last week of the month. QB CJ Stroud threw six touchdowns in his last game.

No. 4 Michigan

Registration: 6-0 (3-0 Big Ten)
Last match: Def. Indiana, 31-10
next game: against Penn State | 12 p.m. Saturday, October 15
Toughest remaining matches: vs. Penn State (October 15); at Ohio State (November 26)
Last unbeaten season: 1997 (12-0, won AP national title)

The Wolverines are hoping to follow up a Big Ten title and playoff appearance with another good run this year. So far, Michigan remains firmly in the mix, though games at Penn State and Ohio State will decide that fate. In six games, RB Blake Corum has 735 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns.

No. 5 Clemson

Registration: 6-0 (4-0 APC)
Last match: Def. Boston College, 31-3
next game: to the State of Florida | 7:30 p.m. Saturday, October 15
Toughest remaining matches: at Florida State (Oct. 15); at Notre Dame (Nov. 5)
Last unbeaten season: 2018 (15-0, wins CFP national title)

The Tigers have passed NC State’s test for scoring consecutive wins against ranked teams (Wake Forest was the previous week). Clemson has tough competitions ahead as it seeks to return to the top of the ACC.

No. 6 Southern California

Registration: 6-0 (4-0 Pac-12)
Last match: Def. Washington State, 30-14
next game: in Utah | 8 p.m. Saturday, October 15
Toughest remaining matches: in Utah (Oct. 15); at UCLA (November 19)
Last unbeaten season: 2004 (released)

Other than a 17-14 win at Oregon State, scoring hasn’t been a problem for the Trojans. However, the Pac-12 has potential potholes for USC as the program looks to make a splash in Lincoln Riley’s freshman season.

Oklahoma State No. 7

Registration: 5-0 (2-0 Big 12)
Last match: Def. TexasTech, 41-31
next game: at TCU | 3:30 p.m. Saturday, October 15
Toughest remaining matches: at the TCU (Oct. 15); at Oklahoma (November 19)
Last unbeaten season: 1945 (9-0)

The Cowboys are coming off a hard-fought home win over Texas Tech, but Oklahoma State still has some tough dates ahead. There’s still Texas and Oklahoma, but it’s not even the three currently ranked teams that are still to come (TCU, Kansas State and Kansas).

No. 8 Tennessee

Registration: 5-0 (2-0 SEC)
Last match: Def. No. 25 LSU, 40-13
next game: against Alabama | 3:30 p.m. Saturday, October 15
Toughest remaining matches: vs. Alabama (October 15); in Georgia (November 5)
Last unbeaten season: 1998 (13-0, won BCS national title)

The Volunteers looked like a title contender with a commanding 27-point win at LSU. The Vols racked up 501 yards on the road, led by Hendon Hooker’s 239 passing yards and 63 rushing yards. But now the big test is this: top-ranked Alabama.

No. 9 Ole Miss

Registration: 6-0 (2-0 SEC)
Last match: Def. Vanderbilt, 52-28
next game: against Auburn | 12 p.m. Saturday, October 15
Toughest remaining matches: at LSU (Oct. 22); vs. Alabama (November 12)
Last unbeaten season: 1962 (10-0)

The Rebels pulled away from Vanderbilt in the second half and have a manageable game next against Auburn before the schedule resumes in the second half of October. But any hope for SEC West will hinge on the home game against Alabama on Nov. 12.

Penn State No. 10

Registration: 5-0 (2-0 Big Ten)
Last match: Def. Northwest, 17-7
next game: in Michigan | Saturday October 15
Toughest remaining matches: in Michigan (Oct. 15); vs. Ohio State (October 29)
Last unbeaten season: 1994 (12-0)

Penn State struggled with turnover in bad weather, but the Nittany Lions defense held firm to hold off Northwestern. After a bye week, Penn State has its first Big Ten slate exhibition game when PSU visits Michigan.

TCU No. 17

Toughest remaining matches: vs. Oklahoma State (October 15); vs. Kansas State (October 22)
Last unbeaten season: 13-0 (2010)

A clobbering from Oklahoma propelled TCU into the top 25 and a ranked vs. ranked game against…Kansas. TCU then held on for a thrilling 38-31 victory in the presence of College GameDay. WR Quentin Johnston had a career day with 14 catches for 206 yards and a touchdown.

No. 18 UCLA

Registration: 5-0 (2-0)
Last match: Def. No. 11 Utah, 42-32
next game: in Oregon | TBD Saturday, October 22
Toughest remaining matches: at Oregon (Oct. 22); vs. USC (November 19)
Last unbeaten season: 1954 (9-0)

The Bruins have scored at least 32 points in all five wins, most recently 42 against the then No. 1. 11 Utah. However, the reborn Pac-12 will continue to give UCLA major tests. Next, Oregon.

No. 22 Syracuse

Registration: 5-0 (2-0 APC)
Last match: Def. Wagner, 59-0

Toughest remaining matches: at Clemson (Oct. 22); at Wake Forest (November 19)
Last unbeaten season: 1987 (11-0-1)

The Orange have recently recorded narrow wins over Purdue and Virginia, so a 59-0 thrashing of FCS Wagner must have been welcome. The remaining schedule, however, is tough, starting with back-to-back games against ranked NC State and Clemson.

Coastal Carolina

next game: vs Old Dominion | 12 p.m. Saturday, October 15
Toughest remaining matches: vs. Appalachian State (November 3); to James Madison (November 26)
Last unbeaten season: Never

Two Sun Belt schools are on the list. The first is Coastal Carolina, led by star QB Grayson McCall. In his first five games, he threw 14 passing touchdowns for a single interception, while adding three rushing touchdowns.

James Madison

Registration: 5-0 (Sun Belt 3-0)
Last match: Def. Arkansas State, 42-20

Toughest remaining matches: in Louisville (Nov. 5); vs. Coastal Carolina (November 26)
Last unbeaten season: 1975 (9-0)

Not bad for a first season at the FBS level. The Dukes are ineligible for bowling as they go through a transition, but have come out and won big so far.
